Eliza Heery

Eliza Heery is a Brookwood Associate based in Seattle. She is a marine scientist and a PhD candidate in urban marine ecology at the University of Washington. Her current research focuses on the ecological impacts of introducing riprap and other building materials into the sub-tidal environment.

At Brookwood, Eliza assists the firm’s Seattle team and its affiliates on an as-needed basis for development project coordination and marketing functions.

From 2007 to 2010, Eliza worked as a Seattle-based contractor at the Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC), a research facility for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). At NWFSC, she provided bycatch estimates to managers for the West Coast groundfish fishery, worked collaboratively with NOAA stock assessment scientists, and helped assess the impact of groundfish fishing on marine mammals, sea birds, and sea turtles.

Eliza received her Master of Science in Fisheries Stock Assessment at Virginia Tech in 2007 and her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Emory University in 2004. She is a certified scientific diver with the American Association of Underwater Sciences, with additional dive certifications from PADI and NAUI.

Eliza’s primary objective as a marine scientist is to document and characterize the role of urbanization and development in shaping marine ecosystems. In addition, she works extensively in education and outreach, both in formal and informal teaching environments.
